The humble shoulders, where we carry much of our responsibility, or sometimes a chip (and where the Hindu god Shiva carries a resting cobra), determine much about our posture and movement in the world, on and off the mat.
MUCH of everyday life, we largely depend on the manipulative abilities of our arms and hands, the relatively free movement of which rests on the mobility of our shoulders. While our shoulders are the most mobile joint in our body, it must also be strong enough to allow us to lift, push, pull, twist, and move with or against force in multiple directions. It took millions of years for us humans to evolve and develop the kind of muscles in our backs that allow us to stand and walk upright. But for the century that passed, modern life activities have taken its toll on our neck and upper back muscles. This workshop will provide asana alternatives for students with neck and shoulder problems due to emotional trauma, repetitive stress injuries, or just everyday life!
Note: If you are recovering from or have any neck or shoulder or spine injury, please consult your physician before registering.
CYNTHIA BERNHEIM combines her enthusiasm and love of yoga with a knowledge of alignment and body mechanics. She received her training as a yoga teacher in the 500-hour Advanced Studies Program at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. She has also completed the Anusara Immersion taught by Laura Christensen. Cynthia currently volunteers her time as a Board Member for the Northern California Iyengar Yoga Association. |

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian healing system that teaches you to understand your body’s constitution and live in harmony with your environment. It is often called the “sister” discipline of yoga and developed out of the same philosophy, making it a valuable companion practice for health and well-being. In this workshop you will learn your Ayurveda body type which will help you chose the right food, activities, and yoga postures for a well-balanced constitution.
Yoga and Ayurveda are two complementary disciplines that focus on the body, mind and spirit. Ayurveda, knowledge of life, is an art and science, inspired by the ancient Indian Sage, Purnarvasu Atreya, to foster the balance and health of the body and mind. Yoga is the ancient science and art of developing the body and mind to prepare for the ultimate emancipation and enlightenment of the soul. Both Yoga and Ayurveda are rooted in the ancient Sanskrit texts called the Vedas. The Vedic scholar David Frawley states, “Yoga is first and foremost a science of Self-realization, Ayurveda is primarily a science of Self-healing.… The link between Yoga and Ayurveda is prana, life force.”
According to Ayurveda, yoga practice and massage should be tailored to the individual. As a massage therapist and yoga instructor, I hear students and clients claim, “I’ve been doing yoga regularly but still my body hurts”, or “I get massages regularly and I still hurt.” I believe through a personalized, ayurvedic approach a constitutional balance would emerge. Ayurveda is the path to self understanding and awareness, a tool to help guide you on your quest to balance your life and find the appropriate path.
Join me in a journey into yourself to find health and empowerment from within.
CLAUDIA VASCONCELOS is a Clinical Ayurveda and Pancha Karma Specialist certified by the California College of Ayurveda and a gifted Iyengar Yoga Instructor, a graduate from the 500-hour teacher training program at the Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. Claudia has also studied yoga and meditation at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Institute in Pune, India. Claudia teaches yoga and practices healing massage throughout the Bay Area, joyfully, skillfully, sharing her love and understanding of yoga and ayurveda. |
